What is a seed in AI video generation?
TL;DR — updated July 16 2026

A seed is the number that initializes a generation's randomness. Same prompt + same seed = (near-)identical output; same prompt + new seed = a fresh take on the same idea. For ad production seeds are the reproducibility dial: lock the seed to iterate one variable (copy, color, duration) while holding the visual take constant — or sweep seeds to explore takes cheaply before committing to a direction.

Two workflows seeds unlock

Controlled A/B: change only the hook text between renders by fixing the seed. Exploration: run five seeds on one brief, pick the take with the best first second, then refine.

Practical notes

Seeds are model-specific — a seed's look doesn't transfer between Seedance and Kling. Log seeds with outputs (v4v's run history does) so winners are re-derivable.

FAQs

Do I need to manage seeds manually?

Not in the directed workflow — it's a Lab-level control for power users iterating precisely.

Why do identical settings sometimes differ slightly?

Some model backends introduce minor nondeterminism even at fixed seed; treat 'near-identical' as the guarantee.
